Johnny “J.R.” Cash aka Johnny Cash was a singer and song writer from America who is
considered to be one of the stalwarts of country music and one of the best selling music artists
of all time. Owing to his contribution to the world of music, he was inducted into the country
music Hall of Fame as well as the Rock & Roll Hall of fame. The USP of Cash was his calm bass-
baritone voice which left an everlasting impression in the hearts and minds of his audience.
Early life and road to success
Born on 26th February 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas, the childhood of Cash was not a very
smooth one. Before getting to the lights of stardom, he had spent good 15 years helping his
family in the traditional cotton farming. At the age of 12 Cash had learnt to play the guitar and
manifested his interest towards music, something that would change his life completely in the
coming years.
After getting married and moving to Memphis, Tennessee in 1954 Cash devoted little more
time to the music. While he was getting trained to be a radio announcer, he used to play with
the Tennessee Two, a two-member band that consisted of Guitarist Luther Perkins and bassist
Marshall Grant. After having being turned down once by the Sam Philips of Sun Records, Cash
finally managed to record a couple of tracks which got released in Late June 1955. These two
songs “Cry! Cry! Cry!” and “Hey Porter” marked the beginning of the successful career of
Johnny Cash and an era of music which was to last for many decades.
Professional music career
In his music career that spanned from 1954 until his death in 2003, he had released as many as
167 albums. The breakup of albums released by Cash included 55 Studio albums, 104
Compilation albums, 6 live albums and 2 Soundtrack albums. He had also worked in
collaboration with a number of famous artists of his era that include the legendary Elvis Presley
as well. Some of the most popular and successful albums released by Cash were ‘At Folsom
Prison’, ‘Ring of Fire: The best of Johnny Cash’, ‘Greatest!’, ‘Now, there was a song!’ and many
more.
Cash also did many live concerts during his peak time in the 70’s and 80’s. His simple and
traditional style to begin a concert was “Hello! I am Johnny Cash”, which remains in the hearts
of his audiences even till date.
